AVLOPPSVATTENBEHANDLING PÅ FARTYG / Sewage Treatment on Ships
International Maritime Organization, IMO, has in Marpol Annex IV tried to achieve an international regulation of marine sewage pollution. Marpol is not yet in force, but some areas are regulated by states and conventions, e.g. the Baltic convention whose rules in principle are the same as Marpol Annex IV. It is already in force for its signatory states as follows (nautical mile, nm,= 1,852 m):
<4 nm
Suspended solids < 50 mg/1
BOD5 < 50mg/l
Faecal coliforms <250/100ml
4-12 nm Sewage to be comminuted and desinfected
>12 nm No restrictions
The modern ferries routing Stockholm/Norrtälje-Mariehamn/Åbo/Helsingfors normally have mechanical/biological or mechanical/chemical treatment of the sewage. “Complete abstract not presented.”,
