BEHOVET AV CELLULÄRA MODELLSYSTEM INOM AKVATISK RISKBEDÖMNING / The Need of Cellular Model Systems in Aquatic Risk Assessment
There is a great amount of chemicals in common use which are not adequately tested for their toxicity to aquatic animals. This is pardy due to the fact that tradiiional toxicity tests on animals are time consuming and expensive. Toxicity tests on higher animals are also erhically questionable and one can also quesdon the informative value of such tests. There is therefore a great need for effective in vitro or cellular tests for evaluation of toxicity. A combination of cellular tests could provide us wkh the information about the concentration range at which we can expect that a chemical exerts negative effects on organisms. When this informauon is supplemented with an estimate of the behaviour of the chemical in the water phase and with loxicokineric consideraions it should be possible to predict the toxicity ofthe chemical to organisms in the aquatic environment. “Complete abstract not presented.”
