DETERMINATION OF PHOSPHORUS IN PULP AND PAPER MILL EFFLUENTS
A study has been made of two digestion procedures for the conversion of organically bound phosphorus to orthophosphate. The aim of the study was to establish if the procedures are applicable to pulp and paper mill effluents. The procedures selected were the standardized peroxodisulphate method and a method using strong acid for the digestion. The digestion products were studied using the 31P-NMR technique. The results show that digestion with strong acid converts the phosphorus compounds to orthophosphate. The result after digestion with peroxodisulphate depends on the types of phosphorus compounds present in the sample and not on the amount of organic material. For pulp and paper mill effluents digestion with strong acid is recommended.
