This works presents a critical review of existing models to evaluate eutrophication consequences related ro emissions from fish cage farms in lakes. Existing models ofthe Vollenweider-type, i.e., models based only on formation on tributary input of toial-P and theoretical lake water retention lime (or related lake morphometrical facrors) cannot be used to predict and/or evaluate potenrial eutrophicarion effects of emissions from the farms in individual lakes. The uncenainties associated with such models have been invesrigated using Monte Carlo simulations. This work has also reviewed uncertainties ofthe data used in such models. This has been expressed as relative standard deviarions (=coefficienis ofvariarions, CV=SD/MV; MV=mean) of the model variables (e.g., total-P and lake warer retention time) for Swedish lakes in general and for Lake S. Bullaren (which was selected as a type lake in this study). The mean CV for the variation within tributaries to Lake S. Bullaren is 0.54; the CV for among-year variability in tributaries is 0.36. “Complete abstract not presented.”
