FYTOFLAGELLATEN PRYMNESIUM PARVUM- OVERSIKT OVER TOKSIKOLOGISK KUNNSKAP / The Phytoflagellate Prymnesium parvum- Account of Toxicological Knowledge
The phytoflagellate Prymnesium parvum Carter, and probably Prymnesium patellifera Green & Hibberd, belong to the toxinproducing algae in the Scandinavian coastal waters. Only particular physiological strains of the species are toxigenic. The toxic properties of P. parvum are attributed to a group of chemical compounds having similar composition, but different toxic effects. The toxic principle is designated ”prymnesin”. Extraction of the toxic compounds indicate their nature as acidic, polar lipids. Purified they resemble proteolipids in the composition of fatty acids together with protein and phosphate. The hemolytic activities are associated with the two glycolipids l’-0-octadeca-cis(6,9,12,15)-tetraenoyl-3′-0-(6-0-â-D-galactopyranosyl- â -D-galactopyranosyl)-glyserol and l’-0-octadeca-cis(3,6,9,12,15)-pentaenoyl-3′-0-(6-0- â -D-galactopyranosyl- â -D-galactopyranosyl)-glyserol. “Complete abstract not presented.”
