IMPROVED REMOVAL OF BACTERIA BY SUBDIVIDING A STABILIZATION POND AT THE WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT IN MINDELO, CAPE VERDE
The waste water treatment plant in Mindelo is oversized, with high evaporation and increasing salinity in the effluent water as a result. By subdividing the ponds with a plastic barrier, a much smaller volume is needed to achieve acceptable bacterial concentrations in the effluent water. The technique of subdividing ponds with a plastic barrier is very simple and cheap. The bacterial die-off constant, K, in the maturation pond is comparable to results determined elsewhere. The bacterial die-off constant in the anaerobic pond was found to be much lower than in the facultative/maturation ponds.
