REDUKTION AV AMMONIUM I LAKVATTEN I SATSVIS BIOLOGISK REAKTOR / Reduction of Ammonium in Leachate in a Sequenced Batch Reactor
Fågelmyran municipal landfill site, situated some ten kilometers north of Borlänge, Sweden, is run by Borlänge Energi AB. Leachate generated at the landfill is conveyed to the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Treatment is costly, inefficient and may affect the sludge quality negatively. Borlänge Energi decided to investigate the treatability of the water using existing facilities at the landfill site. The amount of leachate water generated from September 1991 to September 1992 was 57000 m3. The full scale sequenced batch reactor (SBR) was run for 18 months with weekly sampling. The results show that it is possible to nitrify on average 80 mg/l of ammonium in the 148 m3 aeration tank. Fill time, and thus aeration time, varies with flow; between 2 and 19 hours for each batch, with an average of 9 hours. Water temperature range between 8 and 25°C. Ammonium reduction was on average 230 gN/kg VSS,d and the temperature coefficient 1.06. “Complete abstract not presented.”
