THE IMPORTANCE OF ACIDIFICATION AND ACID GROUND WATER FOR WATER SUPPLIES
This paper deals with ground water acidification and its effect on water supplies in rural areas. The aim was to find solutions to problems caused by ground water acidity. Applications and methods still under development on neutralization techniques adapted for individual use were studied. Insufficient research has been carried out on the necessary filtration systems. This research, based on data concerning 6000 wells, shows that only 10-15 % contain non-corrosive water. This means that about 200 000 wells probably need alkalization. At the moment there are relatively few alkalization appliances in use. Corrosion is one of the main reasons for damage to water supplies. The Finnish insurance companies paid out about 230 million Finnish marks in compensations for water damages in 1987, 26 % of which were concerned with water pipes. “Complete abstract not presented.”
