TVÄRVETENSKAPLIG FORSKNING – VILLKOR FÖR LÖSNING AKVATISKA MILJÖPROBLEM / Transdisciplinary research – solution to persistent problems in the aquatic environment
Transdisciphnary research needed to understand persistent problems in the aquatic environment. An overview of the aquatic environmental problems in Swedish coastal waters over the last decades, shows that eutrophication and fisheries mismanagement are persistant problems which seem to defy attempts to implement a long-term solution. These problems appear with different intensity in time and space but the fundamental causes for their persistence, despite political ambitions to control and curb them, seem inadequately addressed.
In Chapter 17 of UNCED, each coastal state is recommended to ”consider establishing, or where necessary strengthening, appropriate coordinating mechanisms (such as a high-level policy planning body) for integrated management and sustainable development of coastal and marine areas and their resources, at both the local and national levels.” Following suite in 2000, the European Commission has proposed that the Union and Parlament, should recommend each member state to ”implement coastal zone management”. However, as yet there are few- examples of programmes with the broad and trans-disciplinary scope called for by the policymakers.
