WASTE WATER REUSE FOR AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES IN MINDELO, CAPE VERDE
Water is scarce in Cape Verde. In Mindelo almost all fresh water is produced by desalination of sea water because of lack of fresh water. In this perspective reuse of waste water for agricultural purposes is a very interesting alternative. Mindelo is also the only city in Cape Verde with an existing infrastructure regarding the water system. A relatively new waste water treatment plant, consisting of a system of anaerobic, facultative and aerobic ponds exist. However it is over dimensioned. A feasibility study, with the overall objective to point out necessary improvements to start reuse of waste water for agricultural purposes has been done during 1992 by the Department of Water and Environmental Engineering, Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden, in close co-operation with the municipality of Mindelo. The largest problems are the high salt concentration in the waste water and the increase of salt concentration due to evaporation during the long detention time in the waste water treatment plant. “Complete abstract not presented.”
